Rome Trastevere
Trastevere, from Latin Trans Tiberim, meaning Beyond the Tiber, was once connected to the rest of the city only through one bridge, the very famous and antique Sublicio bridge. This was the place that fishermen and sailors chose to live because of the proximity to the river. The twisted and irregular narrow streets, witness of a time when the poor people built their homes close to those of the rich, are now the main feature of Trastevere. Thanks to this amazing crossing of streets, alleys and to the light that filters between them, Trastevere is a kaleidoscope of colours, shades and surprising perspectives!
The neighbourhood is one of the most complete and independent of the city: you can easily find bars, pubs, pizzerias, banks, pharmacies, cinemas, markets and still a lot of tiny old craftsmen shops who keep alive the ancient Roman spirit. One of the most beautiful squares, today a cool meeting point for young people, is the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. It hosts one of the oldest working fountains of the city while on one of its sides stands the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere which houses beautiful mosaics depicting moments of everyday life of the Virgin Mary. Trastevere is also well known for the mysterious secrets hidden amongst its many winding streets. Following them you will enter the beauty of Rome's from the main door!
